FAQ

Got questions? We've got answers.

Common questions from RentalBux landlords — with links to full guides.

What is MTD for Income Tax and does it affect me?+
Making Tax Digital requires landlords with gross income above £50,000 to keep digital records and submit quarterly updates from April 2026 (dropping to £30k in 2027, £20k in 2028). RentalBux handles all records and HMRC submissions. Read the full MTD guide →
Is RentalBux free to use?+
Yes. The free plan supports one property with full MTD compliance — HMRC submissions, invoicing, bank reconciliation, document storage and tenancy management — completely free until March 2028. No credit card required.
Is RentalBux officially recognised by HMRC?+
Yes. RentalBux is on HMRC's official list of software recognised for Making Tax Digital for Income Tax. You can submit quarterly updates and maintain compliant digital records directly — no bridging software needed.
How does joint ownership work in RentalBux?+
Add the property, set your ownership percentage, and RentalBux calculates your share automatically — generating your individual MTD quarterly update. Your co-owner sets up their own account with their share. Each submits separately to HMRC. Read the joint ownership guide →
Can RentalBux handle overseas property income?+
Yes — one of the only MTD platforms to correctly handle overseas property income, reported separately from UK income as HMRC requires, within the same quarterly submission. Read the overseas property guide →
What records do I need to keep for MTD?+
HMRC requires digital records of all income and expenses for each property. RentalBux automatically maintains these — every invoice, bank transaction, receipt and journal entry is stored with a full audit trail. No spreadsheets or paper records are acceptable under MTD.
Can I invite my accountant to access my account?+
Yes. Send your accountant a secure invitation from your profile settings. Set their access level — read-only for review, or full access for bookkeeping. You can revoke access at any time. See the accountant access guide →
Can I use RentalBux for both rental and self-employment income?+
Yes. The Hybrid plan manages both income streams — submitting Property Income and Self-Employment quarterly updates separately to HMRC from a single account. Compare plans →
