Why the free plan is genuinely free

Many MTD software providers offer a "free trial" that expires after 30 days, or a "freemium" plan that gates core features behind a paywall. RentalBux's free plan is different — it gives you full MTD compliance for one property unit with no feature restrictions and no expiry until March 2028. The free plan is funded by landlords who grow their portfolios and upgrade to a paid plan. There's no catch, no credit card required at signup, and no automatic upgrade at the end of a trial period.

When to upgrade to a paid plan

You need a paid plan when you want to add a second property or additional income sources. The Landlord plan supports multiple properties and includes advanced reporting. The Self- Employed plan is for individuals who are self-employed alongside being a landlord. The Landlord + Self Employed plan manages both rental and self-employment income in one account, submitting separate MTD quarterly updates for each. Plan pricing is per account, not per property — adding more properties to the Landlord plan doesn't increase the monthly cost.

What happens if you cancel

You can cancel at any time from your account settings — no notice period, no cancellation fees. Your account stays active until the end of your current billing period. After that, your account reverts to the free plan (if you have one property) or becomes read-only (if you have multiple). Your data is never deleted immediately — it remains accessible and exportable for 30 days after cancellation. HMRC requires financial records to be retained for at least 5 years after the 31 January submission deadline, so we strongly recommend exporting before cancelling.
