Getting your account right from day one
The decisions you make when setting up your RentalBux account — particularly your income type and ownership structure — directly affect how your MTD quarterly updates are calculated and submitted. The most important setting is your income source. Individual landlords (sole owners), joint owners, partnerships, LLPs and limited companies all have different obligations, and RentalBux configures itself around whichever structure you select.
For most landlords, the setup process takes under 10 minutes. The onboarding checklist guides you through each task in the correct order: create your account, choose your income type, add your first property, link your bank account, connect to HMRC via Government Gateway, and optionally invite your accountant.
Connecting to HMRC — why it matters
RentalBux is HMRC-recognised MTD software, which means you can submit quarterly updates directly to HMRC from within the platform. The connection is made through Government Gateway using a standard OAuth authorisation flow — your credentials are never stored by RentalBux. Once connected, RentalBux can submit quarterly updates on your behalf, receive HMRC acknowledgement receipts, and display your MTD submission status in real time.
Inviting your accountant or letting agent
If you work with a property accountant, letting agent, or bookkeeper, RentalBux makes it straightforward to give them access to your account. Send an invitation from User Management in Settings, select Accountant role and they'll receive an email for their own RentalBux login. Your accountant gets their own login, can view your full transaction history, run P&L reports, review your bank reconciliation status, and check that your MTD submissions are on track — without needing your login credentials.
Frequently asked questions
Select "Joint Ownership" as your income type and set your ownership percentage when you add the property. RentalBux will automatically calculate your share of all income and expense transactions and generate your individual MTD quarterly update.
Yes. You can upgrade at any time from your account settings — changes take effect immediately. Downgrades take effect at the end of your current billing period. Changing your plan never affects your data or HMRC connection.
Go to Settings → Bank Accounts → Add Account. Choose Open Banking for automatic daily imports (most major UK banks supported via Finexer Ltd, FRN 925695) or CSV Upload for manual statement imports. Both methods feed the same auto-matching reconciliation engine.
Two-factor authentication is strongly recommended for all accounts, particularly those connected to HMRC. It protects your account from unauthorised access and is required by HMRC itself for your Government Gateway login.
