Installing the RentalBux Mobile App (iOS & Android)

Get RentalBux on your phone so you can scan receipts, track rent payments, and stay on top of deadlines wherever you are.

Why Use the Mobile App?

The mobile app isn't just a stripped-down version of RentalBux — it's the full platform, designed to fit your phone screen. But the real value of having it on your phone comes down to three things:

  • Receipt scanning: See a repair invoice, a letting agent statement, or a service charge bill? Photograph it instantly and it's logged in RentalBux before you lose the paper

  • Push notifications: Get alerted about upcoming MTD deadlines, rent due dates, and document expiry dates — even when you're not actively using the app

  • On-the-go access: Check rental income, review expenses, or approve a bank transaction while you're commuting, at a property viewing, or waiting for the kettle to boil

Downloading the App

For iPhone (iOS):

  • Open the App Store on your iPhone

  • Search for RentalBux

  • Tap Get to download (it's free)

  • Wait for the installation to complete

  • Open Google Play Store on your phone

  • Search for RentalBux

  • Tap Install (it's free)

  • Wait for the installation to complete

The app requires iOS 13 or later, or Android 6 or later. Most phones from the last few years will be compatible.

Signing In

Open the RentalBux app and sign in with the same email and password you use on the desktop website.

If you've enabled two-factor authentication (which we strongly recommend), you'll also need to enter the code from your authenticator app or SMS.

Once you're signed in, the app syncs with your desktop account. Everything you've set up — properties, invoices, expenses, documents — is all there. Any changes you make on your phone appear on the desktop, and vice versa.

Enabling Push Notifications

This is the part you really don't want to skip.

When the app asks "Allow RentalBux to send notifications?" — tap Allow.

Push notifications will alert you about:

  • Rent reminders — when tenant rent is due and when it's overdue

  • MTD deadlines — warnings before your quarterly submission is due

  • Document expiry — when a gas safety certificate, EPC, or EICR is approaching its expiry date

  • Account activity — new logins, accountant access changes, and submission confirmations

You can customise which notifications you receive in Settings > Notifications.

If you accidentally declined notifications, go to your phone's Settings > RentalBux > Notifications and enable them there.

Using the Camera for Receipt Scanning

This is one of the most-used features on mobile.

The app captures the image and reads the key details automatically:
• Amount • Date • Vendor/merchant name

Review the extracted data — check it looks correct

Assign the expense to a property and choose the expense category (e.g., Repairs & Maintenance, Agent Fees, Insurance)

The receipt image is stored against that expense record. If HMRC ever asks for proof, it's there — timestamped and linked to the transaction.

Tips for better scanning:

  • Lay the receipt flat on a table

  • Make sure the lighting is good (no shadows across the text)

  • Capture the entire receipt in one photo

  • If the auto-read misses something, you can manually type in the correct amount or date

Syncing with Your Desktop Account

The mobile app and the desktop website are the same account. There's no separate "mobile account" or extra setup needed.

  • Log an expense on your phone → it appears on the desktop immediately

  • Create an invoice on the desktop → it shows up on your phone

  • Submit an MTD return on either platform → the confirmation is visible on both

Your data syncs in real time as long as you have an internet connection.

Common Questions

Is the app free?

Yes. The app itself is free to download and use. Your RentalBux subscription plan (Free, Landlord, Self Employment, or Landlord + Self Employment) determines what features are available, and this applies equally on mobile and desktop.

Can I do everything on the app that I can do on the desktop?

Almost everything. The mobile app is optimised for day-to-day tasks like receipt scanning, reviewing invoices, and checking your dashboard. For more complex tasks like year-end reports, journal entries, or detailed bank reconciliation, the desktop experience may be more comfortable — but the functionality is available on both.

What if I lose my phone?

Your data is stored securely in the cloud, not on your phone. If you lose your phone, log in from another device.

Do I need to keep the app open for notifications to work?

No. Push notifications work even when the app is closed, as long as notifications are enabled in your phone's settings.
