Why Architects Rely On Us

RentalBux finally gave me peace of mind.

Even after trying several tools, I was struggling with my portfolio of three rentals. MTD just added to that struggle. But then, I was introduced and all my worries disappeared. MTD submissions in minutes, track each property separately, allocate profit sharing. Wow!

Switching to RentalBux was one of the best decisions I made. Especially the joint-ownership module. Our family property had three owners with different shares, and RentalBux handled it quite efficiently.

Feel the Difference RentalBux Makes

Real challenges architects face, and how RentalBux solves them

Real challenges architects face How RentalBux solves it
Project chaos: Project invoices, change orders, stage payments, and client billing scattered across files, spreadsheets, and emails. RentalBux integrates all project income and expenses into one digital workspace, reducing admin and mistakes.
Bookkeeping steals design time: Accounting cuts into design hours, client presentations, site visits, and team collaborations. Automated receipt capture, bank feeds, and project-based cost tracking save hours each week so you can focus on creativity.
Income and cost confusion: Difficulty separating project fees, consultancy, material costs, and overheads for each job. RentalBux tracks multiple income streams and job-specific cost centers independently for accurate quarterly MTD submissions.
Work-in-progress (WIP) issues: Managing project phases and recognising revenue across stages can lead to cash-flow surprises. RentalBux supports phase-based income and cost tracking to keep WIP, profitability, and tax timing under control.
Generic software limitations: Standard accounting tools don’t reflect architectural workflows (CAD software, professional memberships, site travel). RentalBux includes an architect-specific chart of accounts: project fees, software, travel, training, and memberships.
MTD compliance confusion: Quarterly digital reporting feels overwhelming for practices used to annual returns. Built-in MTD workflows, reminders, and deadline alerts make compliance simple.
Error risks: Duplicate entries, mis-categorised costs, lost receipts, inconsistent job coding. Smart categorisation and cost code mapping ensure HMRC-ready data without needing expensive practice management software.

Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions about our services and solutions.

What is Making Tax Digital (MTD) for architects?

MTD for Income Tax is the UK government’s digital reporting regime for self employed architects and small architectural practices. It requires HMRC recognised software to maintain digital bookkeeping for architects, submit quarterly digital updates, and file a yearend final declaration made through MTD compatible software for architectural services.

Do all architects need to join MTD?

Architects must join MTD if they are selfemployed or run a practice and their combined gross income from architectural services plus other qualifying trades exceeds £50,000 from April 2026. Those below that threshold may adopt digital accounting for architects voluntarily. Exemptions exist for practitioners with limited digital access due to age, disability, location or religious belief.

Can an accountant manage MTD compliance for architects?

Yes. An accountant or tax agent specialising in architect accounting software can submit your quarterly updates and yearend declaration on your behalf. However, you remain legally responsible for the accuracy of your submissions under the MTD regime for architects.

What do architects need to submit in quarterly MTD updates?
  • Project fee income and consultancy revenues from architectural work

  • Materials and software subscriptions (CAD, BIM licences)

  • Other allowable expenses such as travel to site, professional membership fees, subcontractor costs

  • Categorised digital records that follow HMRC approved charts of accounts for architectural practices and other business streams

You submit the totals by category not individual invoices or receipts when using an HMRC compatible MTD software platform for architects.

Do architects still need to file a Self Assessment tax return?

No. The MTD final declaration replaces the standard Self Assessment tax return for architectural professionals once in scope. It covers all business income (including side projects) and other income streams in one declaration, using MTD software for architects.

Can RentalBux handle multiple income streams for architects?

Yes. Many architects have additional income sources. For example property rentals, consultancy, design teaching or side projects. RentalBux supports tracking each income stream independently, ensuring full MTD compliance for architects, including those with mixed services and property income backgrounds.
