Which MTD threshold applies to you?
HMRC is rolling out Making Tax Digital for Income Tax in stages. Your qualifying income determines when you must start. Chair rental, services, tips and product sales all count toward the total.
Self-employed barbers with qualifying income above £50,000 must join MTD for ITSA from 6 April 2026 and file four quarterly updates per year.
The threshold drops to £30,000 from April 2027. Chair renters and mobile hairdressers approaching this figure should start building their digital records now.
HMRC plans to extend MTD to income above £20,000 at a date to be confirmed. Starting with RentalBux now means zero disruption when your threshold arrives.
ALL of these income types count toward your threshold:

Why barbers choose RentalBux
Every feature is designed around how barbers actually earn and spend, not how generic accounting software assumes they do.
Designed with Accountants Who Work Alongside Barbers
RentalBux is not a generic finance tool repurposed for hair professionals. It was built by accountants who specialise in barbershop and salon businesses, capturing the real complexities: mixed cash and card takings, split booth income, commission arrangements and tip reporting that other tools simply ignore.
HMRC-Recognised Software for Hair and Beauty Tax Filing
Every quarterly update and Final Declaration submitted through RentalBux meets HMRC's current digital reporting rules. No bridging software needed, no spreadsheet workarounds. Full compliance confidence for self-employed hairdressers and sole-trader barbershops, all in one place.
Salon-Specific Chart of Accounts for Hair Professionals
Stop forcing your income into categories built for office businesses. RentalBux includes a pre-built chart of accounts for salons: chair and booth rental, service fees, retail product markups, colour costs, clippers and tools, uniforms and continuing education expenses.
No Accounting Jargon. Simple Enough for Any Barber
Clean dashboards, guided step-by-step workflows and plain-English labels mean you can manage your salon income tax records confidently without any prior bookkeeping knowledge. Set up on a Sunday, submit on Monday, get back to cutting hair on Tuesday.
Why barbers trust RentalBux for their tax
From sole-trader barbers to mobile hairdressers across the UK, here is what they say about managing their hair business finances with RentalBux.
I filed my first quarterly submission in under 10 minutes. Genuinely could not believe it.
I've been self-employed for 11 years cutting hair and tax has always been a nightmare. RentalBux just made sense from day one. I log what I earn, add my expenses, and it sends the update straight to HMRC. No accountant, no stress, no surprise bills at year-end.
Finally, software that actually understands chair rental income.
I rent a chair in Leeds and do mobile cuts at weekends. Tracking two income streams for HMRC used to take me hours. RentalBux lets me separate both cleanly and submit everything in one place. The mobile layout is brilliant. I sort it between clients.
My accountant actually told me to keep using it.
I was worried MTD would cost a fortune in extra fees. RentalBux handles the quarterly submissions and my accountant just reviews year-end. Cut my annual accounting bill in half.
Set it up on a Sunday afternoon. It just works.
No training, no confusing menus. I logged last quarter's income, added product and kit expenses, and it was ready. Took about 20 minutes total from first login to submitted.
